WHITE SALMON — The undefeated and No. 3-ranked Trico League/District 4 Champion Columbia High School (CHS) Bruins will play in the WIAA Class 1A boys soccer semifinals on May 30 at Federal Way Memorial Stadium following two state playoff home wins last week.
The Bruins will be seeking to advance to their first state title game since 2009, which was the last year that they won the championship. The Bruins play the No. 17-ranked Bush High Blazers (12-5-0) in a 1 p.m. Friday semifinal. The Blazers won a May 24 quarterfinal match, 3-0, over the No. 12-ranked King’s High Knights (13-5-1) of Shoreline at Columbia High School to advance to the semis.
The winner of Friday’s match advances to Saturday’s 3:15 p.m. state championship game versus the winner of the other Friday semifinal between the No. 16-ranked King’s Way Christian High Knights (17-5-2) and the undefeated No. 1-ranked Emerald Sound Conference champion, University Prep Pumas (15-0-2).
The Bruins (19-0-3), guided by second-year Coach Gio Magana, won a May 23 second-round matchup, 1-0, over the Highland High Scotties (14-8). Following a scoreless first half, junior forward and leading scorer Isaac Reynoso (26 goals) scored an unassisted goal from eight yards out after taking control of a loose ball inside the box in the 47th minute.
“We played really good defense in the second half, which was amazing since we had one less player than Highland,” Manga said. “I was very proud of the boys for their strong defensive performance and our goalkeeper Ricardo Cortez just played an outstanding game to help lead our team to a shutout.”
The Bruins played the final 35 minutes of the game with 10 players because a CHS player was ejected for a red card penalty.
The Bruins then advanced to a May 24 quarterfinal contest against the No. 12-ranked King’s High Knights (13-5-1) of Shoreline, and they won 3-0 at home to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
“I’m really super proud of the team and our community is super excited, and it was just a great experience with a huge hometown crowd and nice weather on Memorial Day weekend,” said Magana. “We had a big win over a very, very good King’s team that has many players who will be playing college soccer next year. We were able to control those guys, we worked harder than them, and we just wanted to win more than they did.”
The Bruins went up 1-0 in the fifth minute on an own goal that was deflected into the net by a Knight’s defender following a Reynoso corner kick. Reynoso scored off an assist by junior midfielder Matthew Carrillo for a 2-0 halftime advantage. Carrillo scored in the 75th minute on an assist by senior Damian Sanchez. It marked the 13th shutout victory for the Bruins this season.
“At the beginning of the season, I told the boys that I promise we will not lose a single game and that we would find a way to win and they succeeded in doing that for sure. We won district and league titles and now we’re in the semifinals,” said Manga. “We’re just one win away from going to the championship game.”
