Hood River Valley’s boys wrestling team finished fifth at the Bob Beisel Invitational on Saturday at Forest Grove High School.
Hood River Valley’s Lauraine Smith finished second in her weight division at last weekend’s high school wrestling tournament at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.
As a team, the Eagle girls were 17th of 29 with 42 points.
Smith lost her only match of five, 7-1, to Cleveland High’s Isabel Herring in the 155-pound final. Smith pinned each of her other opponents enroute to a spot in the championship match.
Hood River Valley won six of eight wrestled matches enroute to a 63-18 Dec. 15 dual win over visiting Milwaukie High, and a few days later, Connor Farlow highlighted HRV’s performances at the weekend Liberty tourney in Hillsboro.
At Liberty, the Eagles placed 14th out of 23 teams with 109 points. Farlow continued his stellar season with a runner-up finish at 113 pounds. Farlow pinned his way through three rounds before running into junior Jeremiah Wachsmuth of Clackamas in the final. Wachsmuth was second in the 2022 Class 6A state tournament at 106 pounds and earned a first-round fall over Farlow for the Liberty title.

The South Wasco County High Redsides, guided by Coach Susie Miles, won their 10th consecutive Class 1A Big Sky League volleyball match, 3-0, over the Dufur High Rangers (5-5 league, 5-9 overall) Oct. 4 at Dufur High School.
South Wasco clinched its second straight Big Sky West Division Championship with the win.
The No. 15-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides continue to be the cream of the crop in the Class 1A volleyball Big Sky League, as they won four more games to improve to 9-0 and 16-5 overall.
The Dalles High Riverhawks boys doubles tennis team of juniors Paul Capek and Paul Kelly took third place in the OSAA Class 5A state tournament last month at the Babette Horenstein Tennis Center in Beaverton.
The Hood River boys tennis team is coming off a rather successful season on and off the court. Last year, the team’s cumulative 3.94 GPA was best in the state, earning them the title of OSAA Academic State Champions for the 5A classification. Last June, the boys finished second in the Intermountain Conference district tournament behind Redmond.
