My children attend Colonel Wright Elementary School in The Dalles. My kids are fairly young and since I live only a block away, I chose to walk them at first, then let them go on their own once they got the hang of it.

My views quickly changed as I nearly got hit walking with my kids as a car swerved in front of us while we were in the middle of the crosswalk! Since then I walk my children to the steps of the school and witnessed several other near misses.
I finally had enough and contacted the school principal, Mrs. Bonderu, and was told by her that the crosswalk is not on school property which makes it not her problem. My kids’ safety is not her problem, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing!
She then referred me to The Dalles Police Department. I called the police department and was told they are stretched thin and are making the best effort they can to patrol that area.
I realize everyone is stretched thin and there isn’t enough money to go around but why is it that someone has to get hit or worse before anything is done? There is a crossing guard at the area when school lets out, but nothing for the morning.
