Letter to the editor: Bad behavior

One in particular — the kid stood up the other day and yelled, “I don't want to do this work, send me to the detention office, they won’t make me work down there.”

To me this is just rewarding bad behavior. Wouldn't it be better to tell these kids to choose education or labor to learn a trade? Make them work for the custodian, wash walls, clean bathrooms fill toilet paper and paper towels, yard work.

Maybe some of the kids would realize life is not a free ride. I’m not wanting to create more work for the custodian, but the current system does not work.

This particular kid has been in the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facilities for drugs and other bad behavior and probably doesn’t have a good support system at home. I don't have all the answers but it’s not working right now.
