HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley High School’s Theater Department will be performing “Something Rotten!,” a musical about down-on-their-luck brothers trying to create a hit in Elizabethan England while competing with the bard himself, Shakespeare.
“I [latched] onto the quote, ‘To thine own self be true,’ from the musical and continued to revisit it throughout each difficult moment and decision,” said Director Jennifer Graves, new to HRVHS this year from Wy’east Middle School.
Directed by Graves, with musical direction from Payton Swartout, this jovial production says, “Welcome to the Renaissance” and asks the audiences to suspend their disbelief and dive headfirst in the ‘90s — the 1590s, that is. This high-energy musical is chock full of pop-culture references, Shakespearean jokes, star-crossed lovers, vibrant costumes, and toe-tapping musical numbers.
“As you enjoy the story, perhaps you’ll recognize all of the other famous show references the authors have embedded into this well-crafted script,” said Graves.
“[Graves], along with the cast, are all hard-working, excited, and enthusiastic when coming together to create humorous, thoughtful, and engaging music and storytelling,” said Swartout.
Students had the opportunity to work with the musical director, Swartout, as well as Kathy Peldyak for the stunning costumes, and Charlotte Arnold and Sara Bondurant for the complex tap numbers. With six large production numbers, multiple musical harmonies, tap dancing, tables of props, and a multitude of costume, they were all in for a lot of work, but “our cast and crew of students have invested an amazing amount of time and energy, both during and outside of rehearsal. I am continually amazed by the talent that graces our high school,” said Graves.
