Multiple driving complaints of a vehicle which turned around in the median of I84 near milepost 101 eastbound, led a trooper who witnessed the suspect nearly strike a commercial truck to pull it over. The driver was arrested for DUII and reckless driving, and a warrant granted for their breath for drug testing. That showed a blood alcohol level of 0.24%, three times the legal limit. Separately, a driver was arrested for DUII, and a search of their vehicle found a pipe containing methamphetamine.
Three non-injury crashes. A Honda CRV, southbound on Hwy 197 near milepost 60, struck a fallen rock in the middle of the lane. The driver said they didn’t avoid the rock, due to thinking it was a brown paper bag. A tow was required, and ODOT to clear the rocks. Separately, a semi-truck hit a passenger car while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle during a pass. And a Subaru driver fishtailed on icy I-84 near Rowena, shot into an embankment and rolled.
Someone stole an idling 2025 Ford F150 from Dinty’s Market, in The Dalles, around 5:17 a.m. on Jan. 29. Wasco County deputies pursued the vehicle, then lost sight of it. But at about 6 a.m. the suspect crashed the truck on a sweeping corner leading down into Maupin, skidding into a rock embankment and stopping upside-down. A witness noted the driver, later arrested by WCSO, seemed intoxicated. The truck required a tow.
A driver was injured after losing control on a patch of ice or frost on I-84 and sliding off the freeway near milepost 76 eastbound. The vehicle rolled completely, coming to rest on its tires again. The 53-year-old Hood River resident was transported by ambulance.
