As previously reported in Columbia Gorge News, hundreds of trucks exit Highway 197 onto Five Mile Road, often taking both lanes to navigate the narrow turn. Now, Wasco County officials are considering a request to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for a speed study.

THE DALLES — In an effort to reduce traffic speeds on State Highways 197 and 216, Wasco County officials discussed making a request to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), asking the agency to conduct a speed study.

The potential study would be the first step in Oregon’s process for reducing the speed limit on signs posted along the road, a procedure that can take six to nine months for ODOT to begin, Public Works Director Arthur Smith said.
