BINGEN — Big Britches Productions (BBP) is delighted to announce its summer production of “String,” a musical fable about the Greek Fates living and working in the modern city, opening July 31 at the Bingen Theater and running through August 15.
With a book by Sarah Hammond and music and lyrics by Adam Gwon, “String” imagines what happens when the three sisters who spin, measure, and cut the threads of every human life find themselves tangled up in the very world they oversee. It is funny, tender, and full of heart, the kind of show that sends you home humming and maybe holding your loved ones a little closer.
“String” won the 2015 Richard Rodgers Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and premiered at Village Theatre in Issaquah, Washington in 2018. Composer Adam Gwon, winner of the Fred Ebb Award and the Kleban Prize, has seen his work produced on six continents in ten languages, and a studio cast recording of String was released in 2024. Now this gem comes to the Columbia River Gorge.
The production is directed by Joe Garoutte with music direction by Dan Kenealy and artistic direction by April Garoutte.
Audiences at “String” will be the first to enjoy the theater’s newly installed seating, built and bolted into place almost entirely by volunteers working alongside Joe and April Garoutte. And in a first for the historic building, this is the very first summer the Bingen Theater will have air conditioning, made possible by the generous donations of neighbors and friends who believed a night at the theater should be comfortable for everyone who walks through the doors.
“This theater belongs to this community,” said Joe Garoutte, Executive Director of Big Britches Productions. “When you sit down in one of these new seats, you are sitting in something your neighbors built with their own hands. And for the first time in this building’s long life, you will be doing it in cool comfort on a hot August night. That still amazes me.”
“There is something fitting about opening a show about the threads that connect us in a theater that our community wove together,” added April Garoutte, Artistic Director. “Every seat, every donation, every volunteer hour is part of this story. We cannot wait to share it.”
