On the Outlander Trail Through Scotland, Where History Is The Real Attraction

But four days later, when my Rabbie’s tour returned to Edinburgh, the filming locations weren’t what I was thinking about most.

It was Scottish history.

Outlander recently came to the end of its eight-season run, although fans aren’t quite being asked to say goodbye to the Fraser world yet. The prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is continuing the story with the lives of Jamie and Claire’s parents.

For fans who aren’t ready to leave Scotland behind, this is a pretty good time to see some of the places behind both the fictional story and the very real history that inspired it.

Four days through Outlander country

I joined Rabbie’s four-day Outlander Trail tour from Edinburgh, traveling in a small Mercedes mini-coach with a group capped at 16 people.

Small-group tours are usually my preference. You can get into places that aren’t practical for a large motorcoach, and after a few days together, you actually get to know the people you’re traveling with.

Our group included serious Outlander fans, but surprisingly, there were also people who had never watched a single episode. By the end of the trip, I realized that didn’t matter nearly as much as I expected it would.

The itinerary heads north from Edinburgh through the Highlands before returning south, stopping at places including Doune Castle, Glencoe, Glenfinnan, Loch Ness, Clava Cairns, Culloden Battlefield, Culross and Blackness Castle. Accommodation can also be arranged through Rabbie’s when booking, which made the multi-day trip especially easy.

For an Outlander fan, there are plenty of those I-know-this-place moments.

Doune Castle became Castle Leoch, home of Colum MacKenzie and his clan. Culross stood in for Cranesmuir. Blackness Castle became Fort William. Clava Cairns, a Bronze Age burial site near Inverness, isn’t actually Craigh na Dun, but walk among its standing stones and you’ll understand why it has become a pilgrimage stop for fans.

Those places were fun to see. Some were downright surreal. But somewhere along the road, the tour became about something else.

The real stories are harder to forget

One of the things Outlander does particularly well is weave fictional characters through real historical events. Watching those events on television is one thing. Standing where they happened is another.

At Glenfinnan, we stood near the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745, beginning the Jacobite Rising that would eventually lead to Culloden.

Then there was Culloden itself.

I knew the story before I arrived. Anyone who watched Outlander knew what was coming long before Jamie walked onto that battlefield. But knowing the story and standing on that ground are two very different things.

The Battle of Culloden lasted less than an hour, but its consequences changed the Highlands. Walking through the battlefield and seeing the clan markers scattered across the grass made the history feel much more personal than it ever had on a screen.

There were several moments like that during the trip.

Glencoe is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in Scotland, surrounded by steep mountains and long stretches of green that make you want to stop every few minutes for another photo. Then you hear the story of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre, and suddenly the landscape feels different.

That’s where having a good guide mattered.

Our Rabbie’s guide knew when to talk about Outlander and when to leave Jamie and Claire behind. He told us what had actually happened in the places we were seeing, who the people were and why events that happened hundreds of years ago still matter to Scottish history.

He was informative without making four days feel like a history lecture, and engaging enough that even the people on our bus who knew nothing about Outlander were pulled into the stories.

You don’t have to watch Outlander first

That may have been my biggest surprise. I went because of Outlander. Several people on our tour didn’t, and they enjoyed the tour just as much as I did.

The television series gives fans another layer of connection to the locations, but Scotland doesn’t need Jamie Fraser to make these places interesting.

You’re traveling through the Highlands, visiting medieval castles, prehistoric burial sites, battlefields, lochs and villages that in some cases have changed remarkably little over hundreds of years.

By the fourth day, the distinction between the Outlander stops and the historical stops didn’t feel particularly important anymore. We were simply learning about Scotland.

I travel frequently and take a lot of tours, so I don’t recommend them lightly. Too many tours rush people from one photo stop to another without giving them much understanding of what they’re actually seeing.

After taking multiple tours with them, I know this is where Rabbies is different from other tour companies.

I went looking for the Scotland I had watched for years on television. I found it, of course. I recognized castles and villages. I walked among standing stones. I saw landscapes I’d watched Jamie and Claire cross countless times.

But I came home thinking about Culloden. Glenfinnan. Glencoe. The clans, the Jacobites and the people whose lives weren’t written for television.

Outlander may have been what got me onto the bus. Scotland’s real stories were what stayed with me after I got off.
