Katie Anderson, youth services consultant for the Oregon State Library, presented the award at the library district’s April 18 board meeting to Children’s Services Librarian Jana Hannigan and Children’s Services Assistant Yeli Boots.
“The Odell bus project is one of our sub goals for our five-year Strategic Goals 2016-2021,” said Library Director Rachael Fox. “It’s part of our larger goal to create a stable and permanent presence in Odell.”
The district was among five libraries in the State of Oregon to win. Each year, the state library recognizes libraries that implement outstanding state-funded projects, said Fox. Criteria for an outstanding project include having the most participants achieving all outcomes, being a role model for other libraries, developing strong partnerships to improve services to underserved youth, and/or implementing an outstanding summer reading project.
The Odell Library Express is a free bus service from Odell to the Hood River Library and back to Odell. Every Saturday, the Library Express brings passengers directly to the Hood River Library for story time, a movie, books and snacks, all at no charge. Youth must be 11 to ride alone and 13 to ride with younger sibling. The bus picks up passengers at the Odell Mobile Home Park, 3344 AGA Road, Odell, at 10 a.m. The bus leaves the Hood River Library to return to Odell at 1 p.m. The bus runs from March through September.
“The goal is to provide library services to residents of Odell, with special focus on building early literacy skills,” said Fox.
