State Rep. Mark Johnson (R-Hood River) will host a forum Thursday to discuss Oregon’s current Ski Activities Statue and how it relates to recreation based businesses in Oregon.
The event will happen from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Benson Ballroom of Columbia Gorge Hotel.
Speaking on the topic will be Dave Byrd, risk manager from the National Ski Area Association and Brad Standford, liability defense attorney. Speakers will present information on the outdated Ski Activities Statue, the risks to recreational participants and affiliated businesses, and will be available to answer questions from participants.
“The Ski Activities Statute has not been updated for more than 30 years and a lot has changed in the industry since then. An outdated statue does not provide proper protection to the consumer or the business,” said Rep. Johnson. “This forum will help identify the risks and responsibilities for both industry and their consumers while also identifying gaps in current law that should be addressed. I thank the members of the panel for participating with me in this forum to discuss this important topic.”
Johnson noted that House District 52 is home to world-class recreational opportunities and that laws surrounding the liability issue impact all recreational activities including snow, wind and water sports, cycling and mountain biking.
“It’s important that this community comes together now to begin to address issues surrounding recreational liability so that these activities can remain safe and affordable for all,” Johnson said.
