THE GORGE — Pawsitivity Cat Rescue is calling on the community for help after saving more than 45 cats from a severe hoarding situation in the Gorge.
The cats were discovered living in a tightly packed camping trailer with no electricity or running water, and with a heatwave in full swing, the cats were at risk until the foster-based nonprofit intervened.
Leading the effort is Pawsitivity’s founder Elke Neubauer, alongside volunteer Stina Larson. Both describe the scene as heartbreaking. “It was just a sad situation and these cats needed to be rescued,” Larson said.
She added that a kitten was found deceased from heat exposure when they arrived, which prompted them to act fast. Since then, the team has been working tirelessly to nurse the cats back to health and prepare them for adoption. Each cat is now vaccinated and has been spayed or neutered.
“They are very healthy now compared to the state they were in before,” Larson said.
The cats vary in temperament — many are friendly and social, while some are shy but gentle. A few are still unsocialized and would be best suited as barn cats, provided they have warm indoor shelter and reliable food. “We know our cats really well,” says Neubauer. “We can tell you if they are good with dogs, and if they are good with kids, or need a quieter home.”
Adoption fees for a pair of kittens is $230. “The spay or neuter actually costs more than what we charge for two kittens,” said Larson.

With so many cats needing to be fixed, the rescue often drives up to two hours to find an affordable clinic. In the Gorge area, there are few low-cost options, and they tend to fill up quickly due to high demand. Without traveling, pet owners may end up paying around $400 for the procedure. Neubauer emphasizes the group’s mission: “We are just trying to cover our costs … Our main goal is to stop the overpopulation, not selling kittens. Our goal is to get as many cats fixed as we can.”
Why adopt two kittens instead of one? Larson explained that a solo kitten can be more difficult to manage than a whole litter. “They just have so much energy and need another friend to run around with,” she says, adding that many adopters often return for a second kitten for this very reason.
