The Historic Columbia River Highway awarded grant to “repurpose” the final segment of trail between Mitchell Point and Ruthon Trailhead.

THE GORGE — On June 18, the Federal Highway Administration announced the Reconnecting the Historic Columbia River Highway project will receive an $11 million grant from President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The 73-mile restoration project has been spearheaded by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service, the project sponsor. President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides up to $355 million per year in Nationally Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects for Fiscal Years (FY) 2022-2026.

According to a new release from the FHWA the funds will be used for “repurposing the final trail segment remaining through the construction of a separated and protected bicycle- and pedestrian-only hard-surface trail between Mitchell Point and the Ruthton Trailhead.”
