Trick or treat stayed dry as the annual night of costumed hijinks filled Friday night all around town.
Up and down Oak Street, closed to traffic, walked whole families dressed in everything from Cryptkeeper to Miyaki, collecting candy, stickers, pencils and other gifts. Many headed down to Elks Lodge, where volunteers put on moderately-scary Haunted House and handed out treats.
Witches and ninjas stopped by the Hood River Library for free books and stayed for hot cider and popcorn, a respite from the evening’s chill.
Hundreds of people turned out for the Halloween carnival at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with plenty of new games, ample supplies of cookies and juice, and a cool black-light Nerf gallery where kids, big and old, took turns target shooting.
Residents in witches’ hats greeted hundreds of youngsters at Down Manor, and firefighters at West Side Fire handed out candy, too.
Throughout the night, a long line streamed out of Mike’s Ice Cream for another annual Halloween ritual: the popular business always closes for the year on Oct. 31, and the ice cream that day is always free.
Frivolity continued out at Hood River Valley High School, where students, including pep band members, donned masks, makeup and a few full costumes, as they watched the hometown Eagles defeat The Dalles.
