HOOD RIVER — The Hood River City Council’s March 9 meeting began with a joint meeting of the Urban Renewal Agency Board (URA) and URA Advisory Committee members. URA Administrator Will Norris presented.
First up were 30% designs for improvements to Taylor Avenue and new enhanced crosswalks. Norris said these are the first two of 11 sequential projects in the Heights Streetscape plan.
Nathan Polanski, engineering director with MIG, said the Taylor Avenue neighborhood connection and east-west crossings along 13th Street are smaller pedestrian and bicycle projects that focus on improving safety at intersections. Those improvements include shared path crossings with rectangular rapid flashing beacons, curb extensions, and a buffered bike lane, among others.
An open house to share visuals from the presentation is scheduled for April 17 from 4-7 p.m. at Working Hands Taproom, 1021 12th St., Hood River.
Next, Matt Pope, member of the City Planning Commission, Heights resident, and tech advisor, shared a digital platform concept he created — as a volunteer — that would help keep people updated on all aspects of the Heights Streetscape project.
“My intent was to spark conversation, so this can either help you decide what you want, or it could be a solution itself,” Pope said.
Both the board and advisory committee voted unanimously to further investigate the use, cost, and management of the Heights Streetscape digital concept as presented.
