Another Klickitat County Fair has come to an end, but it definitely was a memorable one. Many Glenwood residents were entered in various events. Glenwood kids showing animals were Emma and Wyatt Patterson, Jocee and Jentry Hoctor, and Blaine Arnold with steers, Jayla and Anthony Avila and Austin Garret with pigs, and Anita Patterson with a goat.
Anita was showing an animal at the fair for the first time, at age 9. She had a great time and her practice with her goat played off. She received Reserve Champion in showmanship and third in Agility Class. Her beautiful smile was priceless and her hours of working with her goat really showed.
Austin Garrett received Reserve Champion in showmanship and third place in market class for his pig. I believe this was also Austin’s first year showing an animal at the fair. Way to go, Anita and Austin.
Three-year old Pacen Stephens, almost 4-year old Haylee Miller, and 6-year-old Natalie Miller showed pigs. Natalie was also brave enough to show a sheep this year for the first time. They all did great and received nice prizes for showing animals that belonged to some of the 4-H kids. Little Glenwood girls Lavender Yothers and Briscoe Monroe showed goats and Briscoe’s big brother Branch, age 5, showed his heifer. These are among the very young in Glenwood but they are very delightful little kids and we’re proud of them for getting out there to show animals.
In the exhibit hall, it was great to see that Natalie received Top of Show for her three perfectly matched cucumbers and Margaret Throop received Top of Show for her beautiful quilt.
In all the evening events, Jentry Hoctor won Reserve Champion in the junior division for Western Games and her mom Jaecee received Grand Champion in the adult division. In Ranch Sorting, the team of Jaecee Hoctor and Johnny Stephens placed first in both open sorting and pro-novice sorting. The team of Lauren Monroe and Kaci Bartkowski placed second in that the pro-novice sorting. Way to represent Glenwood!
In Team Penning, the team of Josh and Jaecee Hoctor and Debbie Tobin placed first. Jaecee also placed fourth on another team. In family penning, I’m not sure of the placings, but I believe some combinations of our Glenwood residents placed well. Tiny Pacen Stephens stole the show again in family penning. He loves being out there on a horse, moving cattle. On another team, made up of Josh, Jaecee, Jocee, and Jentry Hoctor, 11-year-old Jentry really cracked up the crowd when, in a last-ditch effort to move a stubborn cow into the pen, she let out a primal scream that was probably heard clear back in Glenwood. Her proud grandpa Joe Davitt, in the stands, was heard to say, “Yeah, I taught her that!”
In Team Branding, teams made up of Josh and Jaecee, Jim McLean, and Johnny Stephens did well and may have placed in the money. Jocee Hoctor, her mom and dad, and Johnny Stephens made up a team in the Four on two branding. Jocee and her dad caught their calf but it took a bit too long, so there wasn’t quite enough time for Jaecee and Johnny to catch the second calf.
No matter how they placed in all the events, we here in their hometown are so proud of how they represented our community.

I also want to mention one of our really strong Glenwood guys, Caleb Eldred, who is asked to be the mugger in cow milking for various cowboys in the wild cow milking. Caleb, it’s a hard job, and you always step up and make it fun to watch. Caleb just happens to be engaged to Glenwood cowgirl Kinley Troh. Kinley’s grandpa, Dale Thiele, is a Goldendale resident but we sort of claim him as partly ours. Dale competed on a penning team with his daughters Toni Troh and Kristin Thiele. Keep in mind Dale is 85 years old and is a lot of fun to watch out there in the arena. While that team didn’t place in the money, Dale did place second in penning with another team and second in the century branding. That cowboy has still got it, for sure.

In the rodeo, Ty Murray, who graduated from Glenwood High School in June, was brave enough to ride a bronc. While he didn’t make it to the 8-second buzzer, it takes real courage to get out there and try something different. Those broncs were huge and feisty this year. Ty deserves the “Cowboy Try” award this year. Joslyn Arnold competed in breakaway roping and Peyton Sanchey competed in barrel racing.
Peyton continues racing along toward the National Pro Rodeo Association (NPRA) finals. She is an outstanding barrel racer and has had a full summer of rodeos, placing well in the money in nearly all of them. She recently placed first in barrels at the Sherman County Fair rodeo in Moro. She headed from that Friday night rodeo in Moro to Enumclaw to compete in barrels there the next day. She will then compete in Roy and Monroe in Washington, then a final rodeo the week after that in Burns, Oregon.
Peyton is accomplishing all this while preparing to begin her first year at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, where she’ll be a member of the rodeo team. Peyton, we are all rooting for you here in your home town.
I should mention that Joslyn Arnold headed back to Walla Walla Community College for her second year there where she is on the WWCC rodeo team. Joslyn, we wish you another great year at WWCC.

The Market Stock Sale took place after the rodeo on Saturday, and the cattle were shipped out after the rodeo on Sunday. The Glenwood stock sale committee greatly appreciates all who donated to help purchase some of the animals up for sale. Please keep in mind, community donations for the sale are appreciated each year before the fair, so if you aren’t contacted about it, please make the effort to contact Kelly, Travis, or Chris Miller to ensure your donation gets in. Our kids worked hard raising their market animals and deserve all the support we can give them. Thank you.

I received this important news from Laurene Eldred of the Glenwood Homemakers. Laurene says now that fair is over it’s time to focus our attention on the Glenwood Fall bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 4. If you are interested in being a vendor, please contact Marlis Dewey at 360-921-2333 or by email at tmdewey@msn.com. The Homemakers will be serving lots of good food, and, remember, Veterans and Military eat for free. This is a great time to find wonderful gifts for family and friends, and even for yourself. The bazaar brings many very creative people to the Glenwood gym, offering a wide variety of beautiful and useful items.

Glenwood students returned to school on Aug. 27 but the Glenwood/Trout Lake (Lakewood) high school volleyball team has been practicing since Aug. 18 under the guidance of head coach Jaecee Hoctor and assistant coach Heidi Crow. They have a very full schedule this fall and it’s going to be an exciting season for them. They will play their first game on Sept. 4, a non-league game with Open Door Christian Academy. Their first games in the Trout Lake gym will take place Sept. 8-9. The first games in Glenwood will take place on Sept. 15-16. If you can’t make it over the hill to Trout Lake for those games, try to come out to the Glenwood gym to really show support for our Lakewood girls this season.
Glenwood also has two students participating in cross country this fall, under the guidance of Aaron Oldlenberg. Good luck, Eagles.
