Grasshopper Fire

On Aug. 10, the Grasshopper Fire made a significant run east, as seen from the hills south of The Dalles, prompting expanded evacuation orders.

HOOD RIVER & WASCO COS. — The Grasshopper Fire burned six primary residences and 15 outbuildings last Monday after growing nearly 14,000 acres in a single day, the most active 24-hour period since it was first reported on July 23.

Officials observed three to four miles of spread in one hour that afternoon as the fire’s northeast corner repeatedly spotted through dry grass above Friend Road, moving through Shell Rock Road before a host of resources stopped it at Hix Road. As of this morning, the fire was 90,667 acres large and 47% contained, and the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office has not released any more information on structures damaged.

Wasco County Fair

After the Wasco County Fair Board voted to cancel the event last Tuesday due to wildfire risk, organizers shifted gears. Sheep, chickens, bunnies and more had already filled the Hood River County Fairgrounds by Aug. 14.
