WHITE SALMON — Dec. 18 was the last meeting for Director Pat Dempsey, who has served as District 3 representative on the White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) board for the last four years. Dempsey did not run for reelection in the Nov. 4 General Election.
“I’d like to thank the community for giving me the opportunity to serve,” she said, also thanking the administrative team, staff, students, parents, and fellow board members. “I will miss all of this.”
“Pat is a retired educator who served this community as both a teacher and an administrator, and that experience showed up in everything she did as a board member,” said Superintendent Rich Polkinghorn. “She always kept students at the center of her work. We are grateful for her service and wish her the very best.”
District 3 will now be represented by former WSVSD superintendent Jerry Lewis, who was sworn in at the Dec. 18 meeting along with returning District 5 Director Peter Harkema. Both ran unopposed in November.
Lewis served as superintendent of WSVSD for 12 years, returning in 2023 after then-superintendent Sean McGeeney resigned amid a budgetary crisis that saw the depletion of the district’s reserve funds.
“Dr. Lewis brings a deep knowledge of this district and a long history here, and that perspective will be incredibly valuable as we continue to look ahead while also honoring the work that has come before us,” Polkinghorn said. “I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Lewis in this new capacity as we move the district forward together.”
Harkema, who has served as board chair this past year, and District 4 Director Laurie Stanton, vice chair, were reappointed to their respective roles by unanimous vote.
