I very much enjoy writing about our awesome Glenwood kids. Isabella Bensel, daughter of Jason and Sarah and a 2024 graduate of Glenwood High School, is in her second year at Walla Walla Community College. Bella is once again being honored for her exceptional academic achievement for the summer 2025 quarter at WWCC.
In notifying Bella, the Dean of Students said, “Your accomplishments earned you a place on our President’s List, the highest distinction of scholarly excellence at Walla Walla Community College. The President’s List is only presented to those students taking 12 or more credits who finish the quarter with a GPA of 3.90 to 4.00. This honor is recognition of your commitment to excellence and the investment you are making in your future. This distinction will be noted on your official academic transcript.” Congratulations, Bella, you are making your family and all of us here in your hometown so very proud.

Our tiny community was really buzzing with activity the first weekend of October. Muzzle loader hunting season brought lots of hunters in to shop at our stores and gas station. The Glenwood Homemakers hosted another successful bazaar on Oct. 4, with many great vendors and delicious food. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Homemakers. The bazaar enables them to continue supporting community service projects here. And they make the bazaar so very enjoyable.
The Glenwood Women’s Club also is very thankful for all who came to support their table. As with the Homemakers, the Women’s Club raises funds to present one or more scholarships to graduating seniors, support Trunk or Treat, donate to the community holiday dinners, and assist school children and families in need. I have to admit that I already got a head start on Christmas shopping with some beautiful things. If you didn’t make it to the bazaar this year, be sure to put it on your calendar for October 2026.

The fall meeting of the Camas Prairie and Vicinity Pioneers Association took place on Oct. 5. All attendees enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch. Jan Carr Gimlin and her cousin Lisa prepared and presented a great history of the Hansen Pioneer family and Carla Dillenburg presented the history of her Marvin pioneer family. All the ladies had some great items, writings, and photo albums for us to view after their presentations. We very much appreciate Jerry Dean, Laurene Eldred, Toni Troh, and Jeff Elmer for always putting together such great gatherings.

Many of you will remember Cal and Edie McRae, who lived in Glenwood several years ago during Cal’s time as superintendent of the Glenwood School District. Cal wanted all who knew his beloved wife Edie to know she passed away on Aug. 2 in Kirkland, Washington, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s dementia. There will be a celebration of life for Edie on Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church in Bellevue, Washington. For those who would like to reach out to Calvin, his address is 12215 NE 128th St., Apt. 120, Kirkland, WA 98043-7305. Cal suggests that, in lieu of flowers, consider a remembrance in Edie’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.

Trunk or Treat 2025 planning is in the works. I’ll provide more details after the Women’s Club, Glenwood General Store, and Glenwood Station coordinate and plan for the event. It’s always a fun and safe evening for our Glenwood kids and their families. Be planning your vehicle decorations and costumes for your kids and yourselves.

Last Saturday our Lakewood junior varsity volleyball team finally got to shine in the spotlight in Moro. Sherman County Schools hosted a tournament for the junior varsity teams and the Lakewood girls played very well. They placed third in the tournament and let the other teams know they are a force to reckon with. Their ace server, Brooklyn, served many serves in a row that could not be returned. Yes, I think we need to call her Ace Branson now. It made a very long day for both junior varsity and varsity team members, the JV coach Heidi Crow, and Head Coach Jaecee Hoctor. Those coaches are very dedicated to the team and we greatly appreciate them. The varsity and junior varsity teams will be playing in Bickleton on Oct. 7 and in Hood River against Horizon Christian on the 9th. Both are league games and we wish our Lakewood teams great success.
Our two cross country team members, Anthony Avila and Blaine Arnold, are having a great season and racking up new personal records at nearly every meet. Way to go Anthony and Blaine. And thank you, Aaron Oldenburg, for another season as CC coach.
The Middle School volleyball girls, Little Klickwood, are playing hard and improving their skills with each game. The three Glenwood middle school players are Della Fujita, Jentry Hoctor, and Aliaya Kessinger. They played in Centerville on Oct. 8 and finally get their one Glenwood home game on Oct. 15, cross over games with Centerville and Bickleton. Come out and show your pride and support for the “little girls” who have worked so hard all season under the guidance of Tracy and KyAnn Kessinger. They will play their final games in Trout Lake on October 18th in a tournament with Bickleton, Centerville, and Trout Lake.
