County Fair: final 24 hours

Youth from all over Hood River County display and sell their livestock — from small fowl to huge steers — in what is an anchor piece of the county fair.

Fair tip: Watching the youngsters push and pull their sheep or swine can be fun to watch, but the sobering side of the event is that in many cases, the kids will have to say goodbye to their projects, as animals are sold for market.

Saturday concert

Where and when: Griffith Stage, Wy’east Middle School, 8:15 p.m.

Gloriana headlines Saturday. This is big: it’s the largest single event all year anywhere in the county.

Fair tip: Come early, or be prepared for long lines of vehicles before and after the concert.

Bonus this year: Local talent Ben Bonham Trio opens the show.

Cool quilts

Where and when: Community Building, all day

Go beyond the neon and noise of the fair and you find elegant and intricate handcrafts on display in the air conditioned comfort of the Community Building..

Bonus this year, try your hand at winning the drawing for a second “Opportunity Quilt,” with proceeds going to Columbia Gorge Quilters Guild. It’s in addition to the annual Harvest Quilt in the Floral Building.

Equine display

Where and when: Frank Herman Arena, starting at 9 a.m. and also at 2 p.m.

Horses and riders in exciting and humorous displays of skill and cooperation known as Team Penning and Ranch Sorting: riders work together to round up cattle — and the clock is ticking.

Bonus: Youth events are at 9 a.m.

Fair tip: Try to get a seat on the top row of the bleachers, or be willing to stand up for the best view of the action.
