HOOD RIVER — Spring unfolds differently in Hood River. While snow still blankets the slopes of Mount Hood, the valley below begins to bloom, creating a season where winter and spring overlap in spectacular ways. Visitors can ski in the morning, view orchard blossoms in the afternoon, and hike wildflower-covered trails just weeks later.
April: Blossoms, Snow, and Trails
By April, the valley begins to transform. Thousands of pear, cherry, and apple trees bloom across the Hood River Valley, creating sweeping views of white and pink blossoms framed by the snow-covered peak of Mount Hood.
Enthusiasts can experience the blooms along the Hood River Fruit Loop, a scenic 35-mile drive connecting orchards, farmstands, wineries, and cideries. Blossom season typically peaks in mid-April, drawing photographers and travelers eager to experience the valley at its most vibrant time.
May: Wildflowers and Cider Celebrations
By May, spring is in full swing across the Gorge. Wildflowers begin to blanket hillsides along iconic trails like Rowena Crest and Mosier Plateau, where balsamroot, lupine, and scarlet paintbrush create vibrant landscapes above the Columbia River.
May also brings some of the region’s most anticipated seasonal events. Hood River Cider Fest celebrates the valley’s deep agricultural roots and vibrant craft cider scene. In 2026, the festival moves to a new location at the Hood River Airport, where visitors can sample local ciders while enjoying sweeping views of Mt. Hood and the orchards that helped shape the region.
May also hosts the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour, a self-guided tour of art and artists’ studios across the region. The event offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and the opportunity to meet local makers at their workspaces.
“What makes spring in Hood River so special is the way seasons overlap. Snow lingers on the mountain. Blossoms fill the valley. Wildflowers brighten the Gorge,” said Katie Kadlub, CEO of Visit Hood River. “Few places offer such a striking progression of experiences within such a small area, and within a single season.”
