THE DALLES — The Dalles City Council’s regular meeting on Jan. 13 included an update from Community Philanthropy Manager Leah Hall of the Columbia Gorge Food Bank. The food bank, which serves Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman counties, provided an eye-opening report on the rising demand for food assistance in the region.
“In 2024, we recorded over 77,000 individual visits,” Hall said, noting that nearly half of those visits — about 35,673 — occurred in The Dalles. Across the state, food bank visits rose 31% between 2023-2024, according to OPB.
The food bank’s work is bolstered by partnerships with 40 community organizations, including local pantries like St. Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army, Wahtonka Community Food Pantry, Chinook Campus Pantry and the Windy River Gleaners. Hall highlighted the impact of the organization’s transition from a 2,000-square-foot facility to a 12,000-square-foot warehouse, which has improved efficiency but increased operating costs.
“Our annual expenses are around $1 million, covering everything from staffing and utilities to food distribution,” she said.
The presentation also drew attention to the demographic groups most in need, including seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, caregivers, and farmworker communities.
“As the cost of living continues to rise, so does the demand for food assistance,” Hall said, inviting councilors to tour the warehouse.
Councilor Dan Richardson expressed his gratitude for the food bank’s efforts. “It’s quite a nice facility,” he said. “If you haven’t had a chance to visit, I strongly encourage it.”
