CASCADE LOCKS — The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued a penalty for the City of Cascade Locks
in July for environmental violations. The penalty, a fine totaling $14,700, was levied against the city for two wastewater violations, with the DEQ citing the city for “discharge of raw sewage and non-disinfected wastewater effluent to state waters and failing to monitor its wastewater.”
According to City Administrator Jordon Bennett, the first violation occurred in December 2022 when the old pump "became overwhelmed by the volume of liquids,” resulting in an overflow of sewage. The city then contracted to replace the old pump, which inadvertently led to a second violation in September 2023.
The second violation occurred when the newly installed vault and pump failed, and the automatic alarm sensor that notifies city staff also failed. These failures occurred because of a power supply issue to both the pump and the alarm system.
“Both issues have been resolved and the pump has been operating fine since,” Bennett said.
