Numerous Hood River Valley faithful are no doubt questioning the validity of the system of late, considering: The Eagles entered this past weekend ranked sixth in OSAA’s Class 5A football, won their game in dominating fashion, 41-0, and unceremoniously — off the field — dropped to No. 8.

Columbia High will try to rebound this week from two Trico League volleyball setbacks and regain some momentum heading into postseason play.

The Bruins dropped to 8-6 overall, 3-4 in Trico play, with a 3-1 home loss Oct. 19 against King’s Way and a 3-0 road loss at La Center on Oct. 21.

The Intermountain Conference Class 5A volleyball season concluded with Gorge rivals The Dalles High Riverhawks and the Hood River Valley Eagles meeting for the second time Oct. 21. School pride and bragging rights were at stake because both teams were out of playoff contention and at the bottom of the six-team IMC standings.

The Trout Lake girls soccer team’s hopes of a berth in the Class 3A/2A/1A Oregon state playoffs improved last week after a 4-1 win at De La Salle put the Mustangs at 14th in the statewide rankings (as of Saturday).

A familiar voice rang through the public address system at Henderson Stadium as the Hood River Valley girls soccer team lost, 1-0, to Redmond on Oct. 21.

Former athletic director and HRV Hall of Fame wrestling coach Keith Bassham made his return to Hood River to announce a middle school football game the night before, and then the HRV girls soccer game. The Eagles were seeking their first multiple-game win streak of the season, coming off a 3-0 road win two days earlier at Crook County.

The Hawks (3-3-2 IMC, 4-6-3 overall) are in an Intermountain Conference Class 5A playoff race and a loss would’ve been devastating to their chances of reaching the postseason.
