Friends of Mt. Adams Hiking Day is not until Sept.10, but you can sign up now to get in on two guided hikes around southwest Washington’s iconic peak.
The first is Shorthorn Creek Trail to Croften Ridge, a historic trail featuring spectacular views on Mt. Adams’ southwest side. From the upper end of the Morrison Creek Campground, we take the Shorthorn Trail to the crest of Crofton Ridge, a round-trip distance of about 6 miles, with an elevation gain of about 1,500 feet.
Highlights include the recovery of wildflowers and plants four years after the fire, changes in the landscape from lahars originating from Avalanche Glacier and White Salmon Glacier headwalls, plus views in all directions from Crofton Ridge.
Hazards include a dusty trail (steep in a few places), constant exposure to the sun and wind, and jumping a stream. Hike is not suitable for children. Group size limit is 12. No dogs, please. Meet at the Trout Lake School parking lot for car-pooling at 8 a.m.
Depart for trailhead promptly at 8:30. Return to Trout Lake by 4:30 p.m. Sign-up sheet, maps, and complete details will be provided by the leader, Darvel Lloyd, 503-593-2996 (cell); darvlloyd@gmail.com
A more difficult hike follows a portion of Pacific Crest Trail and cross-country to The Bumper, led by Dean Myerson (dean@deanmyerson.org)
This long and tough hike on the west side of Mt. Adams culminates at a promontory of bedrock lava called The Bumper. The round-trip distance is 14 miles, with an elevation gain of 2,636 feet from the P.C.T.
Participants should be fit, ready for this hike, and be able to keep a good pace. Meet at the Trout Lake School parking lot at 7:30 a.m. for car-pooling.
Depart promptly at 8 a.m., and return to Trout Lake by around 5 p.m. Sign-up sheet, maps, and complete details will be provided by the leader.
