Last week’s history mystery showed a bridge over Mill Creek identified by Gary Conley and Dennis Morgan — who both remember crossing it to reach the Natatorium back in the day, and to fish in Mill Creek.
The bridge stood where Third and Fourth streets meet.
The cutline for this old photo, published in The Dalles Daily Chronicle on March 16, 1965, calls it a trestle footbridge. It was under construction by “the men of Company B, 162nd Engineers Battalion.”
It seems to have opened in the summer of 1965.
And Gary Elkinton may have identified our March 5 “mystery” as an old slaughterhouse, above a ravine, between Highway 197 and Columbia View Drive. It should be about 150 feet north of where Highway 197 and Columbia View Drive intersection now lies.
