THE DALLES — A rally and donation drive to support local families disrupted by recent ICE activities will be held in The Dalles this coming Monday, Jan. 19, in recognition of Martin Luther King Day.
The date is also being recognized nationally and locally as a “Day Without Immigrants,” calling attention to the cultural, economic and social contributions of Latino immigrants.
The Martin Luther King Day rally will be from noon to 1 p.m. on the sidewalk in front of Goodwill along W. Sixth Street. Participants are encouraged to park and gather behind Goodwill on W. Eighth Street by 11:45 a.m. for brief remarks about the importance of immigrants and non-violent resistance, then march to W. Sixth Street.
“Protect Oregon’s Progress,” an Indivisible affiliate based in The Dalles, is organizing the Jan. 19 rally in concert with @LatinosUnidosTheDalles, a new organization calling attention to the plight of local residents whose families have been affected by actions of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents — particularly with arrests in The Dalles just before Christmas.
Those arrests have posed economic hardship on local families, notes Debi Ferrer of Protect Oregon’s Progress.
“Local residents are already stepping forward to contribute grocery cards and food items,” she said. “We wish to build upon those volunteer efforts by providing opportunities for the public to make its own contributions to support our local friends and neighbors in need.” People are encouraged to purchase food gift cards from Safeway and Fred Meyer, and drop these off at rally donation points.
