THE DALLES — A new Wasco County initiative aimed at preventing youth substance use and related risky behavior is launching this month.
The More You Know Thursday’s community events are free, multi-part series designed to give parents, educators, healthcare workers, and community leaders of all types the tools they need to support youth well-being. The goal is to reach youth early, effectively, and collaboratively.
The first event will be in-person, Thursday, Oct. 9 at The Dalles Middle School from 6–7:30 p.m. Experts from national organization, The Partnership to End Addiction will be presenting. Future events will be held virtually on the second Thursday of each month.
Developed and facilitated by YouthThink, in partnership with The Partnership to End Addiction, the series takes a non-judgmental, evidence-based approach to strengthening youth resilience, intergenerational connection, and community response to risks and opportunities.
“Local surveys of teenagers show that most kids in Wasco County are making good decisions for themselves by avoiding harmful substances. But strong communities don’t wait for a crisis to act,” said Debby Jones, YouthThink director and Wasco County prevention specialist. “This campaign is about stepping in sooner — because every young person deserves the chance to thrive without turning to substances for relief, escape, or identity.”
Workshop topics cover emerging drug trends, environmental risk factors, school absenteeism, the power of adult role models, and how to better engage parents and caregivers, all through the lens of creating a culture of prevention. The idea is to facilitate positive touch points for adults and young people in school, in the home, and across the community.
“It’s not just about saying ‘no,’” said Jamie Kerr, YouthThink board member. “It’s about saying ‘yes’ to connection, support, open conversations, and a community that builds up our youth and their unique strengths.”
