HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley High School (HRVHS) National Honor Society (NHS) Chapter is leading an exciting new project to enhance the high school courtyard, making it a more inviting and functional space for students. This initiative is spearheaded by student leaders Anthony Schu and Emily Adams, alongside adult advisors Amanda Webster, Meleah Bauman, and Tammy Hosaka.
The project aims to transform the courtyard into a welcoming area where students can gather, socialize, and build a stronger sense of community. NHS leadership, students, and staff are collaborating to ensure the improvements reflect the needs and interests of the student body.
Planned enhancements include weather-proof benches and yard games, creating a comfortable and interactive space for students. If additional funding is secured, the project will expand to include more greenery, extra seating, and covered areas to provide shade and shelter. Furthermore, the NHS hopes to repaint the courtyard with vibrant colors and add stained-glass window film to enhance student privacy.
Community Work Day on Thursday, April 17, will begin the project’s execution, with continued progress depending on available funding. NHS encourages local businesses and individuals to support this initiative, with an opportunity for sponsors to have plaques installed on donated benches as a token of appreciation.
This initiative is driven by NHS student leaders who are passionate about making a lasting impact on their school and community.
“Our motivation was sparked by the opportunity to apply for a Student Service Grant,” said Schu. “We saw this grant opportunity as a chance to create a meaningful and lasting improvement on our campus.”
The project's funding has been kicked off by a $1,000 Student Service Grant awarded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and sponsored by the Allstate Foundation. These funds will cover the initial improvements, but additional community contributions are needed to expand the project’s scope.
Community members interested in supporting this initiative can contact the HRVHS National Honor Society for more details on sponsorship and donations. The NHS is seeking donations of $100 to secure outdoor seating, however all donations will be appreciated. Donations of $300 or more (the price of one table) will be eligible to have their name or business name attached to the table on a plaque.
