White Salmon's Big Red got its first win of the Gorge Youth Football League season last Saturday, upending The Dalles Whitecaps, 34-28, in overtime, in The Dalles.
Kevin Jaco scored three touchdowns for the Big Red and Dylan Rabinowitz found the end zone twice, including the game-winner on a 6-yard run in overtime.
"It was their first win and it was a doozy," said White Salmon coach Bill Ward. "They had only scored one touchdown before this game, and that came in the first quarter of their first game."
White Salmon tied the game at 28 in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard TD run and rush for two-point conversion by Rabinowitz.
The Big Red took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from Zach Mart to Jaco.
The Dalles scored on a 25-yard reverse to even the score and took a 12-6 lead on an 8-yard run.
In the second quarter, Jaco rambled 38 yards for his second touchdown and ran in the conversion for a 14-12 White Salmon lead.
That was the score at halftime as Mart interrupted a Whitecaps drive by intercepting a pass and returning it 35 yards.
White Salmon increased its lead to 20-12 in the third quarter when Mart and Jaco hooked up for the second time on a 65-yard scoring play.
The Dalles came back with 16 points in a row, scoring on runs of 43 and 14 yards and tacking on both two-point conversions.
In overtime, the Whitecaps got the ball first but couldn't move the chains in four downs against the Big Red defense.
When its turn came, White Salmon's offense drove the ball from its 40 to The Dalles' 6-yard line. Rabinowitz carried it from there into the end zone to secure the win.
"Our linemen played extremely well," Ward said. "Everything that happened was because the linemen made it happen. Their pass blocking was excellent and they were making holes for our runners that you could drive a truck through."
Goldendale 22, White Salmon Black 6 --
Goldendale held a 22-0 lead before the Black Knights' Jenson Ladiges scored on a 42-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
Goldendale scored on runs of 62 yards in the second quarter and 55 and 45 yards in the fourth, and converted two of three point-after tries to build its commanding lead.
"Except for those three big breakaway plays, the game was a defensive battle," White Salmon coach Bill Ward said.
Nobody scored in the first or third quarter as defenses dominated the line of scrimmage.
"It was three plays and a punt, three plays and a punt," Ward noted. "Nobody could get a first down. The game was played between the 40-yard lines."
After "a lot of three-and-outs," Ward said, Goldendale got on the scoreboard with 1:40 left in the first half and increased its lead to 14-0 early in the fourth quarter. Its final TD came on a third-down play.
