HOOD RIVER — OSU Hood River Extension Central Gorge Master Gardeners invite families and community members to the October Garden Gathering workshop: Pumpkin Harvest, a fun and educational session celebrating everything pumpkin. This free event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10-11 a.m. at the OSU Hood River County Extension Learning Garden and Conference Room.
The workshop begins in the Learning Garden with a hands-on pumpkin harvest. During this portion, participants will learn about raised bed gardening, including the unique conditions created by a young Hugelkultur bed, as well as trellis design and how trellises can be adapted for different growing needs.
Following the harvest, the group will move indoors to the Conference Room, where children can enjoy pumpkin-themed activities such as decorating pumpkins. Light refreshments, including apple cider and cookies, will be served.
The event will also feature a presentation covering:
How to choose pumpkin varieties based on use, environment, and cost considerations
Growing tips including when to plant, fertilizing, and when to harvest
Culinary uses of pumpkin, including nutrition, texture, and recipes
"We want this to be a fun, kid-friendly, informative event," says instructor Joanne Willis. "Everyone will hopefully leave with a pumpkin and new ideas for using pumpkins in the garden and kitchen."
The Pumpkin Class is designed for all ages and abilities, blending hands-on gardening, educational content, and family fun. This will be the final Garden Gathering workshop of the 2025 season.
Garden Gathering workshops are listed on the Central Gorge Master Gardener website, centralgorgemga.org, find us on Facebook and Instagram @centralgorgemastergardeners, and in the Columbia Gorge News print and online editions.
