Work party planned for Buck Creek Trail

This event is open to any volunteers that wish to help. It is a great opportunity for people to prove once again that volunteers can make a difference.

Columbia Area Mountain Biker Advocates (CAMBA), DNR, Back Country Horsemen, Northwestern Lake Cabin Owners, and various hikers have all been invited to participate in the upcoming work party as well as anyone else who wishes to attend.

Over the last year, volunteers have held several trail work parties and logged in hundreds of volunteer hours. The success of this restoration project can be attributed to the joint efforts of multiple user groups working towards a common goal.

DNR would like to emphasize that the Buck Creek Trail is in a "working forest" and some of the sections of the trail that are currently open will be closed from time to time (for safety reasons) during timber harvest.

Sections (like the Nestor Peak section which is currently closed) will be re-established after the timber harvest is done. Opening sections of trail does not guarantee that they will be permanently open. But is it the goal of DNR to help facilitate a trail system that offers recreation to a wide range of users while balancing the need of a working forest.

Historically the trail has been a favorite for mountain bikers, equestrian riders and hikers. Because of the volunteer efforts, the trail is being restored for future visitors.

Interested volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. at the Buck Creek Trail sign at the four way intersection at Northwestern Lake Rd. and Big Buck Creek (old Lake View Road).

Work to be done includes: bridge installation, fence building, installation of trail sign boards, brush removal, and basic trail bed maintenance.
