Campfires are now banned on all lands protected from wildfire by the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) east of the Cascades. This ban joins many other jurisdictions that have also prohibited campfires. “We’ve had 47 wildfires started by campfires this year,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz.

A fire broke out on Mott Rd around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, caused by a lawnmower. The fire was contained around 10:30 p.m. Total acreage burned is approximately 86 acres. No structures were lost.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is beginning work to create a forest management plan for the newly created Klickitat Community Forest. Because the forest will be managed with the community, the agency will meet with the public and an advisory committee as they develop the plan.

With the arrival this week of the most dangerous fire weather of the year, Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark expanded the statewide burn ban effective Aug. 17 to prohibit all campfires on DNR-protected lands through Sept. 30.
