PORTLAND – The Dalles High boys cross country team finished seventh and Hood River Valley was 12th in the varsity Silver Race at the Rose City Championship Invite cross country meet on Oct. 10 in Portland.
The Riverhawk boys scored 235 team points, while HRV had 306. Class 6A West Salem won the race with 127 points. There were 24 scoring schools in the Silver Race.
The Dalles was led by senior Tyson Long, who ran a season-best 16 minutes, 45 seconds over the fast 5,000-meter track on the Rose City Golf Course. Teammate Luke Sorenson was 33rd in a lifetime best of 16:55. The Riverhawk team score (top five) also included Zeb Stelzer, 44th, 17:15 (PR), Noah Preston, 72nd, 17:38, and Aiden Erickson, 73rd, 17:40. (No. 6 runner Lazarus Taylor also ran a personal best, finishing 92nd in 17:59.)
The Dalles girls team was 11th in the Silver Race, scoring 263 points. Abigail Pope led the way for the Riverhawks, finishing 37th in a personal best 20:54. The other four runners who made up the team score for The Dalles were: Josie Brace, 47th, 21:13 (PR); Alessandra Meza, 52nd, 21:25 (PR); Laura Black, 59th, 21:37 (PR); and Kestley Hodges, 102nd, 22:41.
The Hood River boys were led by Victor Coffman, who finished 27th in a personal best 16:50. Andres Moretti was 53rd in 17:19; Josh Carley was 57th in 17:21; Brayden Strong was 79th in 17:48; and Ethan Clough ran a PR 18:12 and finished 106th.
HRV’s Syl Perrin and Savina Davis ran the elite girls race at Rose City. Perrin finished 26th in the Varsity Championship division in 18:43; Davis was 31st in 19:00. Perrin was 52nd after the first 1,000 meters. She stayed patient and steadily improved her standing, moving up to 32nd after 2,000. Her time was a 21-second personal best.
The race winner was Ellery Lincoln of Portland’s Lincoln High. She trailed Nelida Dalgas by four seconds after 2,000 meters but eventually reeled in the North Salem junior and finished 12 seconds ahead of her in 16:58.
The rest of the HRV varsity competed in the Silver Race, where the Eagles finished 20th and were led by Isabel Ulland, who was 100th overall in 22:39.
