BINGEN — The City of Bingen has completed and opened four new bus shelters that provide ADA-compliant, weather-protected spaces for residents and visitors waiting for public transportation. The $50,000 project was fully funded by a grant from Washington State Tourism and supported by regional partners, reflecting Bingen’s commitment to equitable, accessible transit for all.
Located at high-use stops in downtown Bingen, near the Amtrak platform, and at The Society Hotel, each shelter features a vibrant blue frame with a copper-colored roof, bench seating, protective walls, solar-powered lighting, trash receptacles, and bulletin boards. These improvements will serve not only Bingen residents but also travelers across Klickitat County and visitors arriving by train who rely on local and regional bus connections.
“The addition of these bus shelters strengthens our community, supports tourism, and ensures public transit remains accessible for everyone,” said Mayor Catherine Kiewit. “Investing in this kind of infrastructure makes the wait safer, more comfortable, and more dignified. I am so pleased to have led the effort to meet this need for Bingen and to see improvements that will serve our community for years to come!”

The project was identified as a top-five priority during the City Council’s 2024 Visioning Session and is supported by the Klickitat County Regional Transportation Plan. Partners include Mt. Adams Transportation Services (MATS), Columbia Area Transit (CAT), Mid-Columbia Economic Development District (MCEDD), Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council (RTC), and the Mt. Adams Chamber of Commerce.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Oct. 7 to celebrate the new shelters. The City extends its gratitude to residents, partners, local businesses, and especially Bingen’s dedicated Public Works team, whose effort in installing the shelters was used as an in-kind match and demonstrated the City’s ability to deliver meaningful infrastructure improvements with limited resources.
These new shelters are another step toward making Bingen a welcoming and connected hub for the Gorge region.
