Youth Wrestling: Columbia High School’s wrestling team will host its fourth annual youth wrestling camp in February and March, Bruins Coach Stoner Bell announced.
Bell and CHS wrestlers will work with and teach basic wrestling techniques to kindergarten through sixth-grade students from the local area.
The camp will consist of nine sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, Feb. 28 through March 11, from 6 to 7:15 p.m., in the CHS mat room in Miller Gym.
The camp will culminate on Saturday, March 12, with a tournament by age and weight in Miller Gym. The goals of the camp are to introduce youngsters to the sport of wrestling and to develop in them an interest in the sport that will last through middle school and high school.
This year, Scott Mansur, former Portland State University wrestler and NCAA Division II collegiate champion, will be assisting with the camp. Mansur and other local parents are working to expand the youth camps and start a local mat club for youth wrestlers for next season.
Prep Spring Sports: Monday, Feb. 28, is the first day teams and individuals can practice for their respective 2011 prep spring sports seasons.
Spring sports sanctioned by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association include baseball, fastpitch, boys soccer, girls tennis, and track and field.
Athletes in these sports must participate in 10 practices in order to attain eligibility for official competitions, according to WIAA guidelines. (For additional requirements, contact your local high school’s athletics administrator.)
The 2011 spring sports seasons will end on May 28 with WIAA championship events at various sites around the state.
Collegiate Women’s Basketball: Lacey Kruse was one of two talented Clark College sophomores to receive the Vancouver school’s Student-Athlete of the Month award for January 2011.
At 6-foot-2, Kruse, a former Columbia High School standout, is described by Clark head coach Nancy Boone as “a dominant force inside and a rebounding machine.” This season, Kruse leads the team in rebounds, averaging over 7 per game. She has posted two 14-rebound games, as well as a 17- and a 20-rebound game. Boone said, “Lacey is also a scoring threat, averaging 10 points a game, with a recent 30-point game performance.”
Kruse finished the fall quarter with a 3.62 grade point average (GPA), boosting her cumulative GPA to 3.45. She is also scheduled to graduate from Clark this spring.
The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark’s student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, and fellow students.
Each honoree receives a jacket with her or his name engraved on it. The jackets are provided by Les Schwab through its support of the “Student Athlete of the Month” program, in partnership with Clark’s Penguin Athletic Club and the Clark College Foundation.
