Tennis:
Columbia High's tennis team held its awards dessert banquet May 27 at the home of Bruins Coach Herm Doscher.
Doscher presented third-year letters to senior Jenny Mayer and Desirae Lexa.
Second-year letters went to senior Tasia Garrett and sophomore Kelley McNallan.
First-year letter-winners included Brooke Hathaway, Mara Hathaway, Amy Courtney, Erin McCutcheon, Stacey Neils, Tina Rangel, Katie Fester, Katie Rieper and Ashley St. George.
Doscher gave "most inspirational" awards to Garrett and exchange student Satsuki Higa. Courtney and Rieper received "most improved" honors.
Girls Basketball:
Columbia High's girls basketball coaching staff will host a summer camp for elementary and middle school-age girls June 28-July 2 in Miller Memorial Gym.
Girls entering grades 4-8 next school year are eligible to enroll. Cost of the camp is $25. Each session (for girls in grades 4-6, and girls in grades 7-8) will be limited to 20 girls, so early enrollment is encouraged.
Payment and proof of insurance, along with the player's name and entering grade, can be mailed to Candy Fetsch at 737 Sunnyside Rd., Trout Lake, Wash. 98650; or dropped off in the CHS office.
For information, call (509) 395-3671.
Poker:
Lloyd Hofer of Portland, Ore., was the big winner of the June 3 No-limit Hold-em Tournament at Chips Bar and Grill in Bingen.
Hofer left the table with $500 in winnings. The runner-up, with winnings of $388, was Julian "Bandito" Roque of Bingen.
Steve Gussick, White Salmon, placed third with $222.
He was followed by Phil Wendell, North Bonneville, $148; Joe Bainbridge, Stevenson, $118; Robert Wymire, Phoenix, Ariz., $104; and Israel Jooka, Hood River, $20.
Baseball:
Columbia High senior Brandon Verley earned MVP honors June 3 following his performance in the 2004 Curt Daniels Clark County All-Star Games in Vancouver.
Verley went 4 for 8 at the plate, with a home run, two doubles and seven runs batted in, in the American League seniors' 4-1 and 18-13 victories over the National League all-stars.
"It's a great honor. It was a good, good day," Verley told a reporter after being named most valuable player of the series, which featured two eight-inning games.
His three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning of game two--over the right-center field fence of Propstra Stadium--gave his team its first lead.
The blast was part of a 10-run rally that erased the vestiges of an earlier 11-0 deficit.
"It felt so good to get a pitch and get ahold of one," Verley told the reporter. "I was just looking for something I could drive, and I got what I wanted."
More Baseball:
White Salmon Babe Ruth will hold a garage sale June 24-26 to raise funds for the program for boys 13 to 15 years of age.

Skills Camp:
A "Speed, Agility and Quickness Camp" will be held at Columbia High School in White Salmon June 21-25 for boys and girls entering grades 4-9 next year.
Cost of the five-day camp is $35 and includes a souvenir t-shirt.
According to camp director Larry McCutcheon, the drills and skills learned during the camp will improve an athlete's speed, quickness and agility.
For more information, contact McCutcheon at CHS, 493-1970; or at home, 493-3192, after 5 p.m.
Additions and Corrections:
The page 6 story "CHS's Williams equals school high jump record" in the June 3 edition failed to mention that Jennie Jones shares the school record. Jones put her name in the school record book in 1995.
Also, the medal earned by Abby Zuck in the 4x100-meter relay was her second in state competition, not her first as was reported in the same story. She won her first in 2003 as a member of CHS's 4x400 relay.
