The Nov. 2 General Election ballot will contain two propositions related to the formation of the Mount Adams Parks and Recreation District: The first as to whether the district should be formed, the second to elect a governing body in the event the first passes.
According to information put out by the Klickitat County Auditor's Office, the proposed district's boundary would encompass all areas of Trout Lake School District No. 400, Glenwood School District No. 401, Klickitat School District No. 402, Lyle School District No. 406 and White Salmon School District No. 405-17, all lying within Klickitat County.
If voters approve the proposal establishing the parks and recreation district, the election of a five-member board of commissioners will be validated. (Final General Election results will be certified on Nov. 23.)
A special three-day filing period is scheduled for all five non-partisan commissioner positions beginning at 9 a.m., Monday, Aug. 23 and closing at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25. (The posting deadline for online filings is 4 p.m. on Aug. 25.)
Moreover, all five positions are at large, meaning any registered voter living within the proposed boundary is eligible to file for election to a position on the district's governing body. To do so, he or she must submit a declaration of candidacy form to the auditor's office (Courthouse, Room 203, Goldendale) or online at wei.secstate.wa.gov/klickitat between the dates and times noted above.
County Auditor Brenda Sorensen said there is no filing fee for these positions. And, at this time, she has not estimated how much these elections are going to cost.
"If the proposed district is formed, [its board of commissioners] will be presented with the bill," Sorensen noted. "If it doesn't pass, the entity who signed the resolution authorizing the issue to be placed on the ballot pays the bill--in this case, Klickitat County commissioners."
