We are depending on our entire congressional delegation to become involved and to work together in order to safeguard our clean drinking water, back-country recreation and old growth forests. These things are precious. They are irreplaceable.

May our congressmen and senators work together for the preservation of Oregon’s great wilderness. We and future generations will forever be grateful.

Gardeners seek help

The Parkdale Garden Club is kicking off a fundraiser to help support and maintain the Bicentennial Memorial Garden. The cost of keeping the garden clear of weeds, sprayed and pruned is substantial, and the Club can no longer afford its upkeep.

Gwennie Barrilleaux has been appointed chairman of the committee. We are asking the families of Parkdale, the families who are represented in the garden and the business leaders of the community to help us keep it beautiful and healthy.

Any donation would be appreciated. Donations can be sent to our treasurer Pat Lunden, 6405 Trout Creek Rd. Parkdale, OR. 97041.

If you are interested in gardening, we invite you to attend our meetings. The next meeting will be held Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Parkdale Fire Hall.

Repeating mistakes

The Sept. 26, 2005, edition of Time Magazine features articles posing the question of whether or not the U.S. can “win” the war in Iraq.

Prior to the invasion, millions of people around the world begged and warned the Bush administration not to attack. In recent weeks, according to one Time Article, “more than a dozen current and former intelligence officers knowledgeable about Iraq … voiced their growing frustration with a war that they feel was not properly anticipated by the Bush administration, a war fought with insufficient resources, a war that almost all of them now believe is not winnable militarily.”

One Pentagon Guerrilla-warfare expert concludes, “We are repeating every mistake we made in Vietnam.”

How many more lives will be lost, how many billions wasted in this senseless war, as opposed to devoting resources to nonmilitary ways to address issues of reducing violence in our world?

War is not the answer.
