Klickitat's girls basketball team is 0-2 after losing both of its games at last weekend's season-opening tournament in Dufur, Ore.
The Vandals lost their semifinal matchup with the host Dufur Rangers on Friday, 73-23, then fell to Mohawk, 55-34, in Saturday's consolation game.
Dufur, one of the top 1A teams in Oregon, outscored Klickitat in every quarter but the second, jumping out to a 24-5 lead in the first. The score at halftime was 33-15.
The Rangers put their visitors away in the third quarter, netting 25 points while holding the Vandals to four.
Dufur used pressure defense to force 28 Klickitat turnovers on the night and limit the Vandals to 35 field-goal attempts.
Klickitat was led in scoring by sophomores Melissa Huwe and Trisheena Keys with seven and six points, respectively. Sophomore Aryn Davis was the team's top rebounder with seven rebounds.
Against Mohawk, the Vandals had fewer turnovers (18), more rebounds (26 versus 20 against Dufur) and more shot attempts (39), but got the same result.
Mohawk led 13-5 after one quarter, 29-13 at halftime and 49-24 after three.
Trisheena Keys' 12 points and Aryn Davis' 11 rebounds paced the Vandals, who also got nine points from senior Andrea Justman.
Lyle squad loses
consolation tilt
to South Wasco
Lyle's girls team played good basketball in spurts last weekend, but not enough to win a game at the Sherman County tournament in Moro, Ore.
The Cougars (0-2) fell on opening night last Friday to the Condon Blue Devils, 43-19, then dropped a 51-25 decision to the South Wasco Redsides in Saturday's consolation final.
Cougars Coach Verlyn Smith called the tournament "a good experience" for his largely untested squad.
"We are so inexperienced," Smith noted. "The vast majority of our team have only a year or less of experience. It's going to take us a while to learn to play together."
Lyle's inexperience showed on the offensive end against Condon, which held the Cougars to eight points or less in all four quarters.
Smith praised his team's effort on defense, however, especially its play in the first half, when the Cougars limited Condon to 19 points.
Lyle's lone standout on offense was senior Tara Rappe, who scored on three field goals and 4-of-6 free throws for 10 points
In the first quarter against South Wasco, Lyle found some of the offense that was missing in its tournament semifinal game.
The Cougars matched the Redsides point-for-point in the opening eight minutes, finishing the period in a 14-all tie.
But that all changed in the second stanza as South Wasco capitalized on Lyle's foul trouble and an injury to one the Cougars' key players to build a 13-point buffer (31-18) before halftime.
Rappe and sophomore Shelly Stanovich shared scoring honors for Lyle with six points apiece. Freshman Jessica Cochenour added five.
"The injury and foul trouble forced us to play people in unfamiliar positions," Smith said, "but we fought through it and found real weaknesses to work on for future games."
