If you had fallen asleep during Tuesday's The Dalles/HRV boys basketball game, you wouldn't have missed much.
The low-scoring defensive battle ended with HRV on top 40-28, but had the Eagles been playing anyone other than the Indians -- who were missing their top two players -- they may have found themselves on the losing end.
Senior point guard Andy Holmson rang up 20 points to lead all scorers, while Parker Jones led The Dalles with 17. Both teams employed a stifling zone defense that allowed few shots and fewer fast-break opportunities. Each team went to the free-throw line fewer than 10 times on the night.
All in all, it was a snoozer. But for the 4-6 Eagles, it was a win nonetheless -- something they needed heading into conference play.
HRV will travel to No. 2-ranked Redmond on Friday, and then face Bend on Saturday afternoon to open the Intermountain Conference season. The Eagles beat Bend 40-37 on Dec. 28 during the Barlow Trail Invitational, and will look to do the same on the Lava Bears' home court.
