UMATILLA — Tuesday’s game at league rival Umatilla didn’t have any affect on the standings for the Horizon Christian Hawks.
Already eliminated from playoff contention after last Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Grant Union, the Hawks were playing for pride, hoping to repeat their Sept. 20 effort against the Vikings — one that produced a 2-2 tie.
But the defending District 5 champs proved too strong for Horizon for the second time this season, running away with a 5-2 win.
Brian Stenberg and Paul Rovianek scored goals for the Hawks, who dropped to 1-4-1 in league play, and 5-5-3 overall.
However, that record doesn’t include Thursday’s non-league season finale against Southwest Christian, which the Hawks lost by a 3-2 count (official stats unavailable at press time).
The 2003 season is officially over for coach Hal Ueland and his team, which means the Hawks must bid goodbye to their five seniors: Cheyne Swick, Aaron Griffin, Jonathan Wold, Elizabeth
Nagreen and Rovianek.
But despite the graduations of some of their most experienced players, the Hawks hope to bounce back next season with a solid young core that includes Brian Stenberg, Stephen Stenberg, Colin Swick, David Rovianek, Samuel Seal and Jon Strickland.
Ueland said his two biggest holes to fill will be at keeper, where Griffin has been steady for three seasons, and at striker, where Cheyne Swick has been equally valuable.
