In Cascade Locks the Pirates opened their season against Corbett on Monday. The Pirates hung around early tying the score at 1-1 midway through the first on a goal by Derrick Harbaugh, and then again at 2-2 in the second half on a goal by Moritz Wagener. However, Corbett pulled away late to pick up the 6-2 win. The Pirates now head on the road to take on Damascus on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Horizon Hawks boys’ soccer team is still working on its defense, but it has been good enough to keep them winning.
The Hawks defeated Portland Lutheran 2-1 in their second game of the season on Monday afternoon. After the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the third minute on a Stephen Stenberg volley on a corner kick, Portland Lutheran came back with the equalizer in the 60th minute. However the second half of Horizon’s Stenberg duo, Phillip, scored in the 76th minute to put the Hawks ahead for good.
“Our defense is still the key,” Coach Mark Lago said. “We need to get better at our timing of when to attack the ball.”
Goalkeeper Cameron Root again anchored the defense for the Hawks, coming up with nine saves between the posts. The win puts the Hawks at 2-0 on the season as they prepare to take on Open Door on Thursday.
