A 3-2 last Friday loss to the eventual sixth-place finisher ended Columbia High senior Kenny Mace's bid for a medal at Mat Classic XV in the Tacoma Dome.
The CHS heavyweight contender completed his first -- and last -- appearance on the state mats with a 1-2 record.
Mace, who entered the state Class 2A competition as champion of the Trico Division and the Southwest Washington region, finished the 2002-03 season with an overall record of 19 wins and 5 losses.
His state debut got off to a bad start as Foster senior Patrick Buckmaster, seeded fourth in the 16-man bracket, pinned him 51 seconds into the second period of their first-round match.
Mace kept his medal hopes alive, however, by pinning his second-round opponent, Kiona-Benton senior Kevin Hunter, at the 3:06 mark.
That consolation-bracket victory earned Mace a shot at Deer Park senior Logan Tallon in a late-Friday loser-out match.
In the final issue, Tallon prevailed on the strength of a 3-2 decision that he capatilized on the finish sixth overall during Saturday's medal rounds.
Buckmaster, Mace's first opponent, went on to finish eighth.
In Saturday's heavyweight title match, junior Nick Berry of Vashon Island defeated Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) junior Robby shaw, 3-1, in overtime.
Stevenson junior Sterling Morat was the only wrestler from the Columbia River Gorge to bring home a medal.
The 152-pounder placed eighth in his weight class, forfeiting his final match by an injury default.
