The body of an elderly woman was found near a rocky outcropping at Port Marina Beach early Tuesday morning.
According to police reports, a passerby walking her dogs along the deserted walkway made the discovery shortly after 8:30 a.m. Both city and county law enforcement officers arrived at the Columbia River shoreline several minutes later.
“An autopsy is scheduled but from all outward appearances she seems to have died from natural causes,” said Hood River District Attorney John Sewell, who assisted medical examiner Dr. Michael Pendleton at the scene.
They were helped in removing the body from the edge of the water for the preliminary examination by Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler, Police Chief Tony Dirks, Police Capt. Kevin Lynch and Police Detective Andrew Rau.
The identity of the 88-year-old woman was determined by information found in her handbag that was placed a short distance away with her winter coat. Her name and place of residence are being withheld pending notification of family members.
According to Sewell, the woman was last seen walking in the area yesterday afternoon.
The official cause of her death will be determined by an autopsy in Portland this week.
