Sam Willis of Terrebonne, Ore., won his seventh Ketchum Kalf Rodeo all-around cowboy award last weekend by placing second in steer wrestling and third in cow milking.
At the end of Sunday's show at the Glenwood Rodeo Grounds, the Glenwood Rodeo Association marked Willis' achievement by presenting him with the H.L. "Tye" Murray Memorial Jacket. It was Willis' first Ketchum Kalf all-around cowboy award since 2003. (That was the last year the Murray family gave out a buckle; the award became a jacket in 2005.)
In the 20-year history of the award, no cowboy has won it more often than Willis, who pocketed $604.08 for his weekend's efforts. (A cowboy must earn money in at least one rough stock event to qualify for the award.)
Vancouver cowboy Trevor Scott, a native of Glenwood, edged Willis in steer wrestling, taking down his quarry in a time of 4.2 seconds. Willis finished four ticks back at 4.6. (A week earlier, Willis won the rough stock event at Bickleton's Alder Creek Pioneer Rodeo with the same time.)
Another highlight included three-time Murray Memorial award winner Tom White's victory in tie-down roping. The Prosser cowboy wrapped up his calf in 11.8 seconds, beating out Johnny Sloan of Ellensburg by three-tenths of a second.
In breakaway roping, the top six placers all posted times under 5 seconds. First place went to Wende Karnath of Prineville, Ore.; she lassoed her calf in 2.7 seconds to claim a payoff of $591.60.
The day's biggest payoff went to saddle bronc rider Ty Wilkins of Arlington. Wilkins, the only rider of nine to complete his ride, scored a 69 on Jason Dream and received $816 as his reward.
Bareback and bull riders also had a tough time hanging on. Three riders in each event finished in the money.
Jacob Friddy of Veneta, Ore., rode Irish Tower to a judges' score of 77 to win the bareback competition and its top prize of $433. In bull riding, Scotty Bartels of Tacoma and Andy Crozier of Aumsville, Ore., tied for first place. Each scored an 81 and earned $537.60.
Other big money winners were Mike Thiele of Goldendale, who collected $595.20 for winning the cow milking contest, and team roping partners Steve Johnson, Canby, Ore., and Trevor Bott, West Linn, Ore., whose first-place time of 6.8 seconds garnered each of them $591.60.
