WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins concluded their 14-game girls soccer Trico League schedule by winning two games last week to take third place in the eight-team league standings and qualify for the district playoffs.
The Bruins, guided by first-year Coach Parker Walker, finished in a three-way tie for third place in the eight team Trico standings with the La Center High Wildcats (8-6 league, 8-7-1 overall) and the Kalama High Chinooks (8-6 league, 9-8 overall).
“I feel like our team is hitting its peak playing ability as we enter the postseason tournament. I would like to highlight our seniors Lily Zamacona, Iris Marquez, Sadie Hohensee, Saylor Hauge and Sequoia Cohen for their commitment to our program and leading our team to a very successful season so far," Walker said.
The Bruins, 8-6 league, 9-7 overall, won an Oct. 29, road game 7-0 over the Castle Rock High Rockets (1-12-1 league, 1-13-1 overall). It marked the first shutout for the Bruins who were led defensively by sophomore goalkeeper Lani Uffelman. The Bruins followed with an Oct. 31, 9-0 road win over the Stevenson High Bulldogs (0-12-2 league, 1-15-2 overall). It was the Bruins’ highest scoring game this year and their third straight win for their longest win streak this season.
“The final week of league play we were on the road, and it was nice to beat Castle Rock and Stevenson,” said Walker. “Against Stevenson, six of our nine goals were assisted, which shows our good team play. The most exciting goal for our team was by junior Ella Floria, an outside defender who scored her first goal of the season on a 25-yard shot.”
The Bruins have momentum after winning five of their past six games, including a 4-2 Senior Night home win Oct. 24 over Kalama. Sage Witherrite, Kiera Bucher, Willow Cohen, and Taniah Barajas scored goals for the Bruins. The Bruins qualified for a WIAA District 4 playoff road contest Nov. 5 versus the Evergreen League champion Elma High Eagles (7-1 league, 9-5-3 overall).
“The win against Kalama was crucial to securing third place in our league,” said Walker. “That win was exciting, not only for the outcome, but for showcasing the development of our team. Our style of play has seen tremendous growth since the beginning of the season. The game against Kalama was our best game at implementing the possession combination play and creativity that we’ve been working on in training sessions for games.”
