Port District levy lid lift fails; Voters retain Campbell as County Clerk, Goodrich wins race for School Board

Other headlines from the 2013 General Election were county voters’ decisions to retain Renea Campbell as County Clerk for the remaining year of an unexpired 4-year term, to support statewide Initiative 517 (expansion of initiative and referendum petition gathering process) and to oppose Initiative 522 (labeling of genetically modified food) by a significant margin.

Wayne Goodrich pulled out the win for in the race for Position 2 on the White Salmon Valley School Board over Jan Brending with Goodrich gaining 52 percent of the vote and Brending ending with 47 percent. Goodrich will begin serving a 4-year term starting Jan. 1.

The Port District’s levy lid lift request received 656 "yes" votes (31.68 percent) and 1,415 "no" votes (68.32 percent), according to unofficial returns posted on the Klickitat County Auditor’s Web site.

Campbell’s victory on Tuesday over challenger Sherrill Basse mirrored her primary win in August. This time, Campbell garnered 71.42 percent of the vote (2,631) to Basse’s 28.58 percent (1,053).

County voters favored passage of Initiative 517 by 51.86 percent (2,076 "yes" votes) to 48.14 percent (1,927 "no" votes). Statewide, the measure was failing as 60.03 percent of Washington voters said "no" to liberalizing the state’s initiative and referendum processes. A total of 954,634 votes were cast in this election.

In the election for Initiative 522, county voters opposed passage by a margin of 63.38 percent (2,719 "no" votes) to 36.62 percent (1,571 "yes" votes). The proposed law also was failing statewide as 540,995 of 986,530 voters (54.84 percent) said No to its passage on Tuesday.
