Looks like the South Wasco County Redsides are finding their stride right in a nick of time.
The senior trio of Peggy Espeland, Roxanne O’Neal and Molly Foreaker combined for 12 of the team’s 16 fourth-quarter points, as the Lady Redsides erased a 20-11 halftime deficit by outscoring Ione 30-15 in the final 16 minutes for a 41-35 comeback win on senior night Friday in Maupin.
“We need to play one quarter at a time like we did in the second half,” said first-year head coach Bill Mead. “I am so proud of the girls and the way they’re playing right now.”
With the victory, SWC puts itself within a win and an Ione loss Saturday of securing the fifth district seed.
A loss Saturday to Horizon, however, would have SWC playing a Monday night tiebreaker versus Horizon Christian.
In the opening half, the Lady Redsides (6-16 overall, 4-9 league) could only manage five field goals, while Ione had seven different players score points for spurts of 12-5 and 8-6 to move ahead by nine points at the half.
Foreaker and another senior, Lisa McNamee, drilled two field goals each and sophomore guard Ally Muhleman tacked on four points to lead a 14-6 run to put the Redsides to within a 26-25 deficit entering the fourth frame.
Overall, the Redsides hit 15 field goals and went 10 of 13 from the line. Foreaker finished with 12 points and both Muhleman and Allie Noland rattled off eight points each.
Espeland had five points and O’Neal and McNamee added four points.
Ione also hit 15 field goals and went 4 of 10 from the line, with Rachel Holland leading the way with 11 points.
