In a local pro-set varsity tennis match with Sherman, Omar Rodriguez and Alex Lopez won their singles matches and the No. 1 doubles team of Killian Strassheim and Aldo Manzo lost 3-8 Monday in Moro.
Rodriguez took control early and rode that initial surge to an impressive 8-4 triumph at No. 1 singles, and Lopez had an easier time on the court with an 8-0 shutout to add to his overall record.
TD coach Shea MacNab continues to see vast improvements made by both Rodriguez and Lopez, so far.
“This was Omar and Alex’s second time playing singles. Both of these guys continue to make improvements to their game,” the Riverhawk coach said. “The key has been their serves. They both have become much more consistent on their first serve.”
Strassheim and Manzo are still making gains in certain parts of their game, but they could not establish momentum in their doubles match in an 3-8 loss.
With a match tonight on the road against Hood River Valley MacNab is looking for further progression.
“Killian and Aldo have seen limited playing time this season. Their match showed how just a little more playing time can go a long ways,” MacNab said.
In this match, the Sherman team led by as much as a 6-0 score, but Strassheim and Manzo then restored order with three conseucitve set points to get to within striking distance.
“It just took them getting warmed up a little and they started to click,” said the first-year Riverhawk tennis coach. “Doubles is always tricky because if you are not use to playing with someone it takes a while to get into a rhythm.”
Coming off a 5-3 loss to Hood River Valley earlier this season in March, The Dalles has big hopes of battling back strong against a tough Eagles group.
“We lost 5-3, but we also had five matches go to a third-set tiebreaker, so getting a win is well within our reach,” MacNab said.
After tonight’s road contest, The Dalles pays host to OES in a non-league match at 4 p.m. on Monday.
